Salute to Pro Bono

The Project's success depends on volunteer attorneys throughout the nation who are generously willing to provide pro bono help to our servicemembers who are in need of pro bono assistance. Share your experience with our volunteers and how they are delivering high-quality and high-value legal services to help servicemember clients.

What will you do with my comment?

After the Project gathers and screens submitted comments, your comment may be posted on the Project website, so Project website visitors can see how our volunteer attorneys are helping servicemembers with legal needs. Note that your comment may be edited so the name of your client or other personally identifying information will not be included in the post.

What should I say?

Simply leave a quick comment about how a volunteer helped one of your servicemember clients. Did your client feel greatly relieved when a volunteer offered to help? Did the volunteer attorney dedicate a significant amount of time to the client's case? Did the volunteer help the client receive a good result in court? Did the volunteer attorney go above and beyond to help a servicemember client? Tell us!

The following are examples:

  • A soldier came to my office in Afghanistan feeling scared and hopeless after his wife filed for divorce. He was thousands of miles away from his family, he was worried about his children, and he did not have enough money to hire an attorney in the U.S. I referred his case to the ABA Military Pro Bono Project, which located an attorney in the U.S. who generously volunteered to represent the soldier's interests in the divorce and child custody arrangements. My client was so happy and relieved to know that someone was willing to help! Thank you to the volunteer attorney, John Smith, for helping this deployed soldier with his divorce and child custody case.
  • Thank you to Smith Law Firm for helping an Airman with vacating a default judgment. My client moved out of her apartment after telling her landlord that she received orders to transfer to a base overseas. After she left, the landlord sued my client for thousands of dollars and received a default judgment against my client. My client didn't know anything about this lawsuit until she returned to the U.S. My legal assistance office was limited in what it could do to help with this case, but attorneys at Smith Law Firm volunteered with enthusiasm to help! Thank you Smith Law Firm! This was a sticky case, but Smith Law Firm attorneys spent many pro bono hours on this case and were able to get the default judgment vacated.
