MilSpouse eMentor Program

Unemployment among military spouses stands at 26%, largely due to their high mobility and lack of a traditional career track network. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes and Academy Women are addressing this challenge by launching the MilSpouse eMentor Program, the nation’s first virtual career-building network for military spouses.

Mentors and spouses will register and connect online, creating an information and support pipeline that extends beyond the spouse’s current duty station — and allows spouses to increase their job stability and upward mobility, two of the most challenging employment issues for military spouses.

Our innovative eMentor platform allows for the widest available range of participants. “Mentors” can choose from a range of commitment options:

  • Publish information or helpful resources for all participants to view
  • Post advice for military spouses in response to questions about careers
  • Participate in group discussion forums on a theme or topic
  • Message back and forth with protégés
  • Create a robust one-to-one online mentoring relationship
  •

The program envisions three types of mentors:

  1. Corporate Mentors to provide information about career tracks, networking and training opportunities, and key connections for new military spouse hires and seasoned employees looking to advance their careers within a specific company;
  2. Career Mentors who can provide more global information about job hunting, reentry into the workforce and career changes, etc. in a particular industry or career field; and
  3. Peer Mentors who can assist fellow military spouse protégés with career issues as well as other challenges specific to military families such as deployments.
