ABA Free Legal Answers for Veterans and Immigration
ABA Home Front is an online resource to help military members, veterans, and their families find legal information, referrals, and representation for civil legal matters. The ABA Home Front website has a wealth of materials created specifically for those connected to the military to help them understand legal issues and obtain law-related assistance for the problems they may face.
Directory of Programs
The ABA Home Front Directory of Programs is a national, state-by-state guide to all of the free and low-cost legal service programs available to assist veterans, servicemembers, and their families with all types of civil legal problems. Every state in the Directory features contact information and descriptions for some or all of the following types of programs:
- Military Legal Assistance Offices, providing free civil legal services to qualified military members and their families
- Legal Aid and Pro Bono Programs, also providing free legal services, but often only to those with low incomes
- Lawyer Referral Services, which can connect clients to lawyers for free or low-cost consultations, and which also sometimes have low-cost or pro bono attorneys available
- Military-Specific Programs, which have been established to address the legal needs of veterans and servicemember clients
Information Center
The ABA Home Front Information Center provides current legal information on a variety of topics affecting military families. The legal content in the Information Center is exclusive to the American Bar Association, adapted from a number of publications issued by ABA entities, and is written in a manner that is easily understood by non-attorney users. The Information Center features short articles on matters of interest to military members, including: (1) Considerations when hiring a lawyer; (2) Eligibility for free services through military legal assistance offices; (3) Family law matters, including divorce, custody and child support, and (4) Legal protections available under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
American Immigration Lawyers Association Military Assistance Program (MAP)
The American Immigration Lawyers Association Military Assistance Program (MAP) provides pro bono immigration assistance to active duty service members and their families in order to maintain the highest level of readiness possible in the event that a military member is deployed. To learn more or to request assistance, please visit the MAP website.
ABA Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice portal for users to ask civil legal questions. In collaboration with the ABA Military & Veterans Legal Center and ABA Free Legal Answers, ABA Free Legal Answers for Veterans and Immigration allows attorneys to volunteer to answer questions from veterans and qualified individuals. Attorneys licensed and in good standing in their state and who are accredited with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are eligible to answer veteran-related questions. Client users who meet income eligibility guidelines can ask about VA benefits, discharge upgrades, and similar veterans’ federal legal issues. The mobile-friendly platform allows users to ask, and attorneys to answer, civil legal questions from the comfort of their home or office. This also allows users in rural areas to access legal resources, which can help prevent larger legal crises from developing. Attorneys and users can log in and use the site 24/7/365.
